IEDC Finance Course - Chicago 2014

Available to only IDC Members

A limited number of scholarships are available to IDC members for the upcoming International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Economic Development Finance Course in Chicago, September 3-5, 2014.

The core objective of this analytical course is to explain the financial tools used to stimulate private sector investment that results in the creation of permanent, private sector jobs, increased productivity and improvement in the local tax base. Specifically, the course will review current debt, equity, grant and incentive-based financing programs that are accessible to practitioners both rural and urban. Moreover, course participants will learn how to calculate debt/service ratios, cash on cash rate of return, capitalization rates, underwriting ratios, debt coverage ratios and similar financial tools used to identify project feasibility. Course instructors will also spend time teaching how potential investors measure return on investment (ROI) how lenders evaluate risk. Participants will have an opportunity to work through multiple case studies in order to solidify their knowledge of the finance programs.

2014 Illinois Economic Development Plan

On July 1, 2014 the State of Illinois unveiled their Economic Development Plan. This document is a 5 year strategic plan that lays our a clear vision to enable the state to continue to be a force in the global economy, to partner with the legislature to achieve these goals, and to enable economic stakeholders across the state to nurture promising industries, be more responsive to businesses, and help individuals prepare themselves for positions in the new economy.

To that end the state identified seven key initiatives to achieve that goal:

  • Strengthen the state's ongoing business attraction, retention and support initiatives
  • Promote economic development on a regional level
  • Develop an increasingly competitive workforce
  • Increase fairness and opportunity for distressed communities and the unemployed
  • Make Illinois a top destination for entrepreneurs
  • Implement a comprehensive statewide strategy to drive innovation
  • Modernize and revitalize our infrastructure
To review the plan, the Illinois Development Council recently hosted a webinar with Assistant Director of DCEO, Dan Seals. Click Here to review Assistant Director Seals' slides.
